As part of their multimedia projects, VMCers will have the option to explore graphic design. Graphic design volunteers would help them bring their visions to life, including deciding on a concept and figuring out which design tools best accomplish that goal.

The first module will focus on photography and photojournalism, and photography volunteers would help us to build on that foundation.

Volunteers will support the workshop, and answer questions about photography and utilizing photo equipment and editing software.

Some of the VMCers will opt to work on podcasts. We will walk them through using the equipment in our podcast studio, but would need volunteers to help them troubleshoot any issues that may come up, and to help them work through any challenges they might encounter while editing.

Assist VMCers with developing their stories, choosing an angle, and editing their stories. We publish teen-created content that is “uncensored but not unedited,” so it is important that story coaches help to ensure that the teens’ copy is clean and adheres to journalistic standards without stifling creativity or altering their message.

Some teens may also choose to create videos. We will teach them how to use the film equipment available in the office, but volunteers would need to assist them with troubleshooting as well as help them with any problems that might arise while using our editing software.

Overview

Work with VOX teens and adult staff to provide copy-editing support of digital and print products.

Copy editors give everything we publish at VOX a thoughtful, necessary eye right before we hit publish or send an edition to print. We are looking for people with experience in Associated Press style but are happy for any and all eyes on content!

Digital content will be shared directly with the copy editor through Google Drive as needed and you will be contacted via email with a request. Print edition pages will be available at the VOX office prior to the edition going to press and a sign-up will be sent in advance with available slots for editing.

The time commitment for a copy editor will vary but if you offer your expertise regularly, we might ask for your support on average two to three hours a month.

Copy editors should be able to:

1. Utilize AP style to copy-edit both print and digital products for VOX.

2. Use Google Drive to edit digital content.

Responsibilities

  • Attend VOX ATL Volunteer Orientation
  • Work with VOX Teens to successfully publish content on digital and print platforms
  • Attend virtual VOX publishing meetings, Wednesdays at 5pm

Overview

Work with a teen as they craft a story from start to finish! Teens at VOX can tell stories in multiple formats – writing, video, audio – AND in different modes –investigative, “my story,” opinion pieces, reviews. Depending on your interest and expertise, you’ll work with a teen on a given story and support the creation from beginning to end. You will be sent a more in-depth questionnaire to fill out about your interests so we can properly match you with a teen. The time commitment for a story coach is dependent on the level of support needed and the length of the story. This is not an ongoing commitment, however, and can be taken on when you are available and able.

Story coaches should be able to:

1. Commit to seeing a story through with a teen and remain flexible in the process.

2. Understand, talk about, and support the creation of content.

3. Use Google Docs in Google Drive to offer feedback and constructive support.

Responsibilities

  • Attend VOX ATL Volunteer Orientation

  • Support Teen Content Creation by offering feedback from the pitch process to the end product

  • Take on one story at a time and encourage and support story production, meet deadlines, solve problems, etc.

  • Support teens both in-person (schedule to meet teens at VOX during our open hours) or online through content collaboration on Google to get the story completed!
